When A Son Marries
WHEN YOUR SON TAKES A WIFE
We all face emotional crises in life. One of them is when
the first child leaves home, for college, the armed services or for work.
When we sit down at the table and his chair is empty, it seems like it's
ten feet wide. There's a lump in our throat and a funny feeling in the
pit of our stomach. We're not hungry.
Another emotional crisis in life is when our son takes
a wife. It seems to me to be normal for those of us who are parents to
be anxious about this. It is one of the greatest decisions of life. But
we need to remember that there was no guarantee when we married that all
would work out. We must trust the Lord. If our children wait until there
is every guarantee in marriage, then of course there would never be a marriage.
We must learn to turn loose. Because many times, the only way to hold on,
is to turn loose.
The Bible has said, "For this cause shall a man leave
father and mother, and cleave unto his wife, and they twain shall be one
flesh" Matthew 19:5. Let us all be willing to take a back seat, and
do everything we can to encourage and nothing to discourage the new home.
Even if we disapprove of the one our son is marrying, we must remember
it is in the hands of God. We have all known cases that we thought would
not work out, but they've worked out beautifully. We have all seen cases
that we thought were picture book marriages, but yet they did not work
out well at all. The Bible says, "Ask, and it shall be given"
Matthew 7:7. So let us all approach our heavenly Father, and ask His richest
blessings on this marriage. Let us each pray when our son takes a wife
that it will be the beginning of a new and beautiful relationship that
will result in a fine Christian home which can bring happiness and blessing
to all concerned. Although the relationship will be different when our
son takes a wife, he is still our son, and will be precious and wonderful.
In fact, he may be even more precious and even more wonderful in the days
ahead. Above all, remember let us pray.
