The Discus.....

Click here to return to Page 8 (the Cichlid)
The discus comes to us from the Amazon basin in South America.....
Temperature 75-86 degrees F, this fish really likes warm water.....
The discus enjoys soft water towards the acid side......
Please put a great number of plants in the aquarium for the fish to hide in. The discus is a very shy and peaceful fish.
The discus can be breed and raised in captivity, laying eggs on slate, leaves, or glass. The parents care for their young. The mother develops a mucus on her skin that the babies cling to and eat. It is very difficult to determine sex, buy at least five if you ever want to try to breed them. The discus is one of the most expensive of the freshwater tropical fish.
This fish is suitable mainly for a species tank...However many people put them in a community tank and they do very well.
