| Feeding your fish
If your fish are not fed properly they could have problems with digestion, diseases, and obesity. Just a we humans need a healthy diet, so do our fish. To have a healthy diet we must provide the fish with varied foods containing plenty of roughage. Some species will also require particular foods in their diets.( Always ask when you buy a new fish) |
|
| One rule to remember is to never over
feed your fish
Not only is it bad for the fish, it will pollute the water very
fast. It is better to feed your fish small portions several times a day,
at least twice. The best method of feeding the fish, is once in the
morning and once in the evening. The amount of food you give them should
be eaten within a few moments. It is a good idea to skip one meal once a
week. This will benefit their digestion. Do not do this with baby fish,
they need food every day. If you have shy or nocturnal fish, give
them extra food after the light is turned out.
When you have a new fish that will not eat, try live brine shrimp or thaw some frozen blood worms. Many fish are very stressed when they are moved to a new Aquarium and will not eat right away. This worries many new fish owners. They want their new guest to eat and be happy. Over feeding at this time occurs often. Usually they will eat later when they become let stressed and hungry. The Betta is one fish that distresses a lot of beginner aquarist. |
Dry
food
Good basic dry foods should contain every thing your fish needs, unless your fish requires live food. Most dry food come in flake or granule form and float on top of the water, however there are tablets for the bottom feeders, and pellets for the very large fish. Check the list of ingredients on the container to be sure the food you buy contains a lot of roughage for your fish.
SPIRULINA Why is it important to have Spirulina in exotic fish diets? For many species of exotic aquarium fish, algae are an essential part of the diet. Lettuce and spinach are poor substitutes for algae: they do not have the same nutritional value. Spirulina has several important nutritional features that are important for beautiful healthy fish.
1. Spirulinas cell wall is rich in muco-proteins that enhance the natural mucus layer of the fishes skin. This results in a shiny appearance, healthier fins are less app to tear, and improved resistance to skin infections. Spirulinas soft cell wall enables it to be easily digested.
2. Many fish, especially African Cichlids and Gold Fish, eat a lot of blue green algae and the wild. Blue green algae like Spirulina have a special protein called Phycocyanin not not found in another algae or terrestrial plants. Japanese scientists have linked Phycocyanin to improved kidney and liver function. The effects of Phycocyanin are the reasons that Japanese fish farmers make extensive use of Spirulina. Their experience is that the fish grow less obese and have improved survival rates, superior growth and appearance over those not fed Spirulina. This, of course, means higher selling prices for them.
3. Spirulina and other micro-algae contain essential fatty acids that are essential for proper development and functioning of the internal organs. Without the proper fatty acids, many saltwater fish will not breed or survive.
4. Colorations in fish depends to a large degree upon the pigments that they get from their food. The most important pigments are of a class called carotenoids. These include beta-carotene and xanthophylls. Fish species very greatly regarding the type of carotenoid pigments they can use, and how they individually exhibit these coloring agents in their skin. Hence the great for variety of colors in fish
Spirulina is the natural food highest in carotenoid pigments, some 20 times the amount found in carrots. Spirulina contains at least six forms of this pigment providing a "rainbow" of color possibilities. When feeding your fish a food containing Spirulina, you will see better colorations within a few weeks.
Spirulina is a rich source of A and B vitamins, especially B-12, and naturally chelated and bio-available calcium and iron.
One should be very careful about the kind of algae to feed fish. Not all are good for fish when describing algae for food, we can grow an analogy from mushrooms most are nutritious, a fewer toxic, yet some are good food and it takes an expert to tell the difference. Spirulina is one of a few algae that are excellent food sources. Wild algae also harbor diseases and parasites that can damage and kill fish.

Live Food We call frozen and live animals "LIVE FOOD", the nutritional value is the same in both. Some species of fish will not eat the frozen food because it does not wiggle. ( One example is the Seahorse ) The aquarium shops carry many variety of frozen foods which you can keep in your freezer. There are fortified brine shrimp, blood worms, daphnia, and more. You need to break of a piece off and put it in small container to defrost before feeding it to your fish. The most common live animals that the shops carry are brine shrimp, *tubifex worms(recommended as freeze dried only), ghost shrimp and feeder fish. If you want to raise your own live food, here are some examples; mosquito larva, brine shrimp,( you can purchase brine shrimp eggs in most aquarium shops, these are wonderful for your baby fry) fruit flies,( there are some fish that have to be fed Drosodhila, which is a fruit fly) white worms, and earth worms. You can also cut up fish fillets, mussels, clams, even fresh or cooked shrimp in small pieces to feed your larger fish. Fish enjoy variety just like us. Be sure to try some of the freeze dried foods, your fish will love it, it is as beneficial as frozen food and a whole lot easier to store. *Live tubifex worms can be dangerous to fish such as gouramies or bettas causing bloat and intestinal woes.
Vegetable Food Many fish need to have vegetables in their diet. Some catfish and many cichlids must have vegetables. You can obtain dry vegetable fish food in all aquarium shops. You can also prepare your own vegetables at home. Blanched romaine lettuce and spinach leaves, brussels sprouts cooked for about five minutes, small pieces of potato, and fresh sliced zucchini squash. Salt water fish love fresh romaine lettuce leaves. Put a small rubber band around a piece of rock and the vegetable to keep it on the bottom of the tank. Be sure to remove all food not eaten after one day, also drag the surface of the water with a fine net for floating excretion. The old food will decay and pollute the water. A lack of vitamins weakens the resistance to disease in fish. There are supplemental vitamins available, but if you feed your fish the proper dry food, frozen food and a varied selection of live food along with the vegetables, the supplements are not necessary.

Feeding Rules:*Feed the fish a variety of food
*It is best to feed fish small portions of food at least twice a day, preferably in the morning and in the evening ..*Feed only enough that can be eaten in a few minutes..(excluding vegetables).....Have one fasting day once a week. ( do not include baby fish ).....*Give shy or nocturnal fish an extra feeding after the light is turn out....*If you must leave the fish for a few days, it is wise to either get vacation food blocks or a responsible person who understands about the dangers of over feeding. It is actually better in most cases to not even feed the fish than risk the problem with a person that does not understand the dangers of over feeding.
There are also Automatic feeders that are available.
