Microbial technology is one of the fastest growing and promising technologies
of the future. Bacterblend elimination of nitrate, phosphate and ammonia,
for fresh and saltwater aquariums, is an outgrowth of this emerging
technology, and is a unique approach to eliminating specific unwanted byproducts
in an aquarium. There have been attempts to categorize Bacterblend with currently
available products.
Naturally found microbes, bacteria, are known to consume a wide array
of organic and inorganic compounds with selective breeding to metabolize
unwanted compounds in the aquarium.

Ozonizer.
Applying ozone to your tank raises the ORP, increasing
oxygen levels and decreasing dissolved wastes; ozone also effectively kills
numerous harmful pathogens. AquaZone ozonizer's corona discharge technology
provides higher ozone concentration than UV bulb style ozonizers and allows
variable ozone output. Just dial in the amount of ozone that your tank
needs!
Marine Depot is the source for Aquarium Ozonizer
and other saltwater aquarium accesories. Besides Aquarium Ozonizer, Marine
Depot has other great deals on aquarium equipment.
Marine Depot offers FREE SHIPPING on most (but
not all) orders over $150. Please check our website to see if the Aquarium
Ozonizer qualifies. Most orders over $150 ship for free via UPS ground, except
for large, heavy or unusually shaped products. (See www.marinedepot.com for
complete details.)
Marine Depot has Aquarium Ozonizer and a wide
selection of saltwater aquarium products. They also offer deep discounts,
friendly customer service and expert advice.
Sterilization and pURIfication of water by the
use of ozone has been used for many years in drinking water and wastewater
treatment plants throughout the world. Ozone is a very reactive form of oxygen
that can destroy an enormous variety of liquid waste materials and toxins.
In the aquarium, it offers a simple, highly effective method of maintaining
a clean and stable environment for the plants and animals.
The staff at Marine Depot is a great resource.

Salt Water
Supplies
Strontium & Molybdenum Supplement;
provides bio-available strontium for lush growth
of purple, pink and green algaes, snails, hard tube worms and clams. Magnesium
is added to make up for deficiencies in some of the newer brands of sea salt
mixes. Potassium & Molybdenum are added to assist the symbiotic algae
growing in coral and other invertebrates tissues. Corals will open more and
stay attached to their skeletons better, with regular use. Phosphate &
nitrate free! Contains no gluconates,EDTA, or other organics to raise DOC
levels, as many competing products do. For best results use Kent Kalkwasser
Mix or Concentrated Liquid Calcium first.
To use add one teaspoon or capful per 50
gallons. Adding more than the recommended amount of this product is generally
very safe and can be beneficial in many cases, particularly when you have
heavy animal loads.
Marineland's 550
Powerhead!
Undergravel filters perform best when water flow
through the gravel bed is consistent and predictable, creating surface agitation
for tank oxygenation. Air pumps and airstones can deteriorate or clog. As
a result, they become noisy and ineffective... frequently requiring replacement
and/or service.Penguin Power Heads deliver constant flow with fully adjustable
aeration and increased surface agitation... and they remain silent at all
times. The air valve regulates air flow, the air filter eliminates noise
and dust and the intake strainer keeps debris from fouling the impeller...
that's efficiency.
And... Penguin Power Heads are absolutely safe
in both fresh and saltwater.
Flow Rate 145 G.P.H!
I can recommend a good protein skimmer. The protein
skimmer I am speaking of is a Seaclone made by Aquarium Systems, it is a
Venturi and is for tanks up to 90 gallons.
I just recently bought a seaclone
skimmer by Aquarium systems and I love it. It is basically like a tornado
in a tube and it whips up a hefty froth of protein on a daily basis so I
know it is performing well. It uses something called a venturi valve to create
this tornado effect. I would advise you to check it out, I think it is neat.
Good luck for your search for the right skimmer.

Gorgonians
| _ |
|
|
|
Feather
Red Finger |
The gorgonians are soft coral colonies that are tree like. They attach
themselves to rocks at the base and have a skeleton that is similar to animal
horns.
Many gorgonians are photosynthetic and so need light to survive. Others,
like the finger corals, grow at great depths or shaded areas and don't require
light. They usually must be fed to survive in the aquarium.
Aquarium Care:
The gorgonians all need strong currents to help rid themselves of the
waxy film that is secreted to rid themselves of algae. Surge devices or turbulent
water flow is best.
Care of Photosynthetic Gorgonians:
Since they are photosynthetic, they need good lighting as well. Although
most are not accustomed to the very strong lights produced by metal halide,
it is said that they will eventually adjust and grow faster because of it.
Some can be fed while others do not. In either case they don't need to be
fed in order to survive.
Care of Non-Photosynthetic Gorgonians:
For those that need to be fed, feed them at least once a week. Feed detritus,
brine shrimp, Daphnia, Cyclops, or pulverized flake food, shrimp or clams.
Sometimes you can stir up the gravel slightly in order to mix detritus in
the water for feeding the detritus eating species.

Sea Fan |
The sea fan Callogorgia sp. is a gorgonacian soft coral, commonly
found on the continental slope in the Gulf of Mexico and North Atlantic Ocean.
The sea fan comprises a colony of polyps forms a planar array of branches
that ramify from a central hold-fast and stalk. The branches and stalk are
flexible, but fixed in attitude and orientation. Callogorgia gets its food
by filtering particles from the water column. The individual polyps can use
their tentacles to grasp particles that come into very close proximity, but
overall, a colony depends upon water currents to receive an adequate food
supply.

Gorgonians are also known as octocorals, so named because the individual
polyps have eight tentacles that they use to feed. If you look closely at
the branches of a soft coral (sea rods are probably the most obvious), you
may see the tiny tentacles of the individual polyps. Each of these tentacles
is feathered, and the creature uses them to capture plankton floating in
the current. Soft corals polyps are able to contract and expand, and this
ability changes their appearance enormously. When the polyps are expanded,
the colony appears soft and fuzzy. Contracted they look more like barren
tree branches in winter.
These unique animal colonies bear a spectrum of colors. Many varieties
enjoy a symbiotic relationship with the microalgae zooxanthellae. This algae,
as with the stony corals, lives within the tissue of the coral polyp. And,
as with the hard corals, the algae partners give a greenish or brown hue
to the coral. Some Gorgonians sport their brightest color in their living
tissues, others in their skeletal stalks. Colors range from greens and yellows
to breathtaking reds and purples.

Aquaculture has produced a winning group of stunning
Gorgonians
One of the nicest things about these corals is that the wild Gorgonians
do not grow as well as these captive raised ones. These corals do not go
through the shock that sets back so many of the collected Gorgonians.

When we first visited the rock farmers in Florida in 1994 we were
able to visit Dale Barger as he was starting to stock his aquaculture rock
farm with premium honeycomb limestone from the Bahamas. We visited several
of the live rock collectors who were harvesting Florida rock at that time
and we were most impressed with Dale Barger's rock because of the heavy growth
of sponges and other invertebrates. Dale was planting his rock farm at the
same time our friend Tom Frakes was planting his farm in Florida. Much of
this aquaculture rock is now over five years old and it is beautiful.

SPONGES
Coral
and Sponges
| __ |
M
 |
Sponges may be a useful addition to reef tanks as they are filter
feeders specializing in very small particles such as bacteria and smaller.
Because they feed on such small particles, from several microns to less than
a micron, they may not be competing with other filter feeders that eat
zooplankton or algae. In theory they could reduce bacterial levels in the
water taking out things that pass through the finest mechanical filters.
The basic sponge is REALLY a simple animal. It consists of
a cylinder lined inside and out by cells. In between the outside layer of
cells and the inside layer of cells is the area of the matrix (also called
mesoglea, a name which means "middle jelly"). The cylinder wall is perforated
by many tiny pores connecting the water outside of the sponge cylinder with
the inside cavity. These pores give sponges their scientific name of Phylum
Porifera (Porifera is derived from Greek words meaning "pore bearing").
|
|
|
|
 |
|
|
|
Though plant-like in
appearance, sponges are actually
one of the most primitive animals in the sea. They belong to a group called
porifera. Most of us are familiar with the dried colorless varieties that
populate the kitchens and bathrooms of the world. But in the ocean, live
sponges can be found in an infinite variety of colors and shapes. Most of
them are relatively small, but some varieties can grow to over 6 feet in
diameter. Sponges differ from all other marine invertebrates in that they
have no true tissues or organs. Their structure is composed of simple
aggregations of cells. The name porifera means pore bearer. The tissue of
sponges encloses a vast network of chambers and canals that connect to the
open pores on their surface. Sponges feed by drawing a current of water in
through their pores, filtering out the nutrients, and then ejecting it out
through an opening. Many sponges on the reef resemble some of the corals
in shape and color, but upon closer inspection the difference is apparent.
They are one of the many life forms unique to the ocean environment. Sea
squirts are very similar to sponges in appearance. They belong to a group
called chordata. They are usually found growing in clusters on rocks. Like
sponges, they filter particles of food from the water by pumping it through
tiny pores and then expelling it through a central opening.
