Killifish are some of the most beautiful and
interesting freshwater fish that are available to aquarists. They have some
of the more interesting habits and as killifish are suitable for the most
inexperienced aquarist, some are a challenge for the most experienced. Killifish,
or "killies" as they are commonly known in the hobby, have often been described
as the living jewels of the fish world, and in many cases rival marine fish
in color, form and beauty.
Killifish as a group comprise over 700 species from
most regions of the world. Some are easy to keep in the aquarium, others
are difficult. Most are brightly coloured, others, have fascinating behaviour.
This site contains the basics on how to keep them as well as photographs
and breeders tips. This site currently contains 250 pictures of 127 different
species. Check out the most recently added killifish images. |

Common
Lyretail
(Aphyosemion australe)
The Common Lyretail, which becomes about six cm
(about 2,4 inch) long, is probably the most common killifish in the aquarium
hobby. Any aquarist can keep and breed the Common Lyretail.
Killifish (also called killis or egglaying toothcarps)
is a large group of fishes. Many of them live for only a few months during
the rainy season, and die when the dry season comes. Because of this they
have evolved eggs that can lie and wait for the next rain to fall. For the
aquarist this means that you can breed the fishes, pick up the eggs and send
them trough the snailmail in an envelope or package to an other aquarist.
The other aquarist can then put the eggs in water, hatch them and get
fry!

The African species are the most abundant, diverse
and colorful. They range from the diminutive lampeye and Diapterons to the
monster gularis, from the Seemingly painted Aphyosemion to the almost marine-like
look of the Nothobranchius species.
African species are not terribly common in the tropical
fish hobby; most fish come from South America or Asia. Only the rare oddballs
seem to come from Africa: odd barbs, weird catfish, African cichlids, the
one of a handful of West African Dwarf cichlids. Yet most killies in captivity
are African.

Breeding Bottom Spawners
In this article Bill will present the methods
that he uses for breeding those species of Aphyosemion and Fundulopanchax
that prefer to lay eggs on the bottom of the tank. (abb. Fp.- latest American
scientific name for some larger, formerly Aphyosemion species, but typically
dont use this name with a European killie keeper- usually honks em
off). Of this group some of the more locally available fish include Fp.gardneri,
Fp. sjostedi (Blue Gularis), Fp. filimentosus, Fp. walkeri, and Fp. puerzli.
The male will usually assume a position parallel
to and over the female, kind of nudging her toward the bottom with his chin
(is it a chin on a fish?). The male will come along the female, twist his
body slightly S shaped leaning into the female toward the bottom
and an egg will be laid and may be squirted into the tank sediment with a
flick of the males anal fin.
For this group, a mop made as described in his
first article, less flotation device, may allowed to sink and rest on the
bottom, or a mop that is twice as long as the water is deep may be floated.
This does have the advantage of letting you decide what your particular species
prefers by just looking to see where the eggs are placed. This is an easy
way, if the tank lacks sand or peat, to see if eggs are actually being produced.
It also provides access to the mop to observe production, or if desired to
pick eggs for storage or shipment to a friend. Again, mops may be moved to
a second tank to allow the eggs to develop and hatch if the species does
not require a dry period to develop (more on that later).

Killifishes,
from the class known as Egg-laying Toothcarp,
are
small fish. With the exception of Australia, Killifishes are
found on every continent.
The
Killifish,
or sometimes called egg laying carps, are
a beautiful group of fish.
They all have colorful bodies and enlarged
tails.
They are generally small, but aggressive
tank-mates.
They can also be finicky eaters.
The fish are often very hard to find and
expensive.
