| I first started being interested in tropical fish when my daughter brought me her's to "fish sit" for the weekend. They were in a 2 gal. tank which she had transferred from a 10gal. tank. I thought, "Oh", that seems simple enough to have fish as pets. So out I went, bought my 10 gal. tank & all that was needed to start my fish hobby. My first fish were a male and female guppy, neon tetras and a couple of platy. Later on I added an albino cory. Over-anxious I bought too many fish too soon, most of them died except my neons and cory. Later I bought swordtails, probably I had too many fish in my small tank because they also died. I then bought more swordtails a male and 3 females. I also bought a beautiful male Betta, which lasted only 2 days. Found out later I wasn't giving it the right food. I then bought a 2 gal. tank to house a brand new red Betta. This Betta lasted a few months. By this time I had found Andre's Aquarium Club on the Internet. Became a member, received my Andre's special blend fish food and started emailing The Aquarium Doctor... the club vet. I was doing complete water change too often, transferring the poor Betta in a small bowl every time. |
| The urge to buy a bigger tank was too great, went out and bought a
48gal. tank with all the trimmings. Oh, it was so nice with the 2 driftwoods,
lava rock and lots of plastic plants and nesting shrubs. I waited the full
2 weeks, also added good bacteria. Then I transferred the male swordtail
from my 10gal. into the 48gal., bought 5 blackskirts, 6 headlight tailight
tetras, 3 more female swordtails, 3 female molly along with a male, also
a couple of cory.
A week or so later transferred my lone female swordtail and a cory from my 10gal. into the 48gal. Again I started losing some fish. Went back into Andre's club site, started reading and sending a lot of questions to the Aquarium Doctor. The patience of our dear Aquarium Doctor must have been extended to it's limit at times with my questions.
I think my biggest mistakes were being over anxious and taking advice from the wrong people. (Stick to the Aquarium Doctor!!!) I also had new additions to my 10 gal. tank. 2 small algae eaters and a few more neon tetras, a total of 10 tetras. I kept losing my tetras to the filter. Next I started having algae problems...stringy ones, so I bought a pleco. My pleco and small algae eater died a short time after. I decided to give my neons to my daughter, bought a beautiful male Betta and 2 females. Was hoping to breed those, but with a new pleco in the tank I needed a filter. So now my 10 gal. tank houses 3 Betta, 2 cory and a pleco, they are all doing very well.

| Wait...the problem didn't end here, the day after a change of water
my water in the 48gal. tank turned a very dark brown. I hurriedly changed
the water, bought a bigger filter and took out a lot of decorations. To my
disappointment the water became green with algae. Changed the water every
day, still the water was so green, I couldn't see the fish or the decorations.
This lasted several months. Again sent an email to the Aquarium Doctor, told
him about my problem, the advice he gave me was to change my water less often,
only every 2nd week, feed my fish less ( I was giving my fish almost 2 tsp.
of food twice a day.) Stop giving algae tablets to my pleco and cut down
on the lights. The lights in my tank were on 14 hrs. a day. Now I still feed
my fish twice a day but only a 1/2 tsp. per feeding. The lights are only
on for 8 1/2 hrs. This helped a bit, but my water remained quite green and
2 of my molly had popeyes, they both died. So again I wrote to the Aquarium
Doctor, describing my problem. My PH. level was too high. His advice was
to add vinegar a bit at a time checking the Ph level each time until it went
down. My ph. level didn't go down but the water had cleared just a bit. Two
weeks later after cleaning the tank, started the vinegar procedure again.
Ph level wasn't going down, so being an inpatient person, I took the vinegar
jug and just poured it down the filter, ph level was a bit down but not enough.
Again I took the jug and poured more down. I looked at my fish and they were
all in the opposite corner from where I had poured the vinegar. My son was
with me and I said to him "I think I pickled my fish". I watched them for
a while, after 1/2 an hr. or so they started swimming freely. Next morning
to my delight I could see a shadow of the filter tube in my water. Good sign,
the water was clearing. Now, 5 days later the water is as clear as can be.
What a thrill to be able to see my fish.
This week I also added 3 silver mollies.
Mind you, not all was bad experiences. During the winter my molly and swordtail bred. This was quite an excitement for my husband and I. I started by putting the fry in a breeding tank, but notice they were doing quite well hiding in the nesting shrubs placed at the bottom of the 48gal. tank, they also ate Andre's special blend flake food. The colors of the swordtail fry are something else, body 3/4 black with the head part a dark orange, the small male especially nice, with it's long black tail with a touch of orange in the arch part and the head part orange.
The molly didn't turn out as nice, they are a dirty yellow with a bit of black and yellow on the tail. My fry are growing quite rapidly into adulthood. I noticed last week that my young male swordtail is already making passes at the females. :o) Here are the members of my fish family, which are doing very well thanks to the Aquarium Doctor. My favorites are the molly and Betta, they are always searching for food or chasing each other. |
6 headlight tailight
5 blackskirt
2 dalmatian molly
1 gold molly
3 silver molly
3 swordtails
3 albino cory
2 small algae eaters
1 pleco and of course my 13 small fry
| I plan to add a beautiful blue Betta, which will probably be my last
purchase, because I expect more breeding in the future.

Yours truly
