| Freshwater Resources
Species Specific fishindex.com
There is a wide range of freshwater fish to choose from. We should start with the fish that are easy to keep. These fish are known as non aggressive or community fish. The Angelfish is one of the most popular for a beginner. If you have a desire to breed a species of tropical fish this would be a good one. If that is your intention, buy at least four young fish, your chance of getting a pair is much better. It is impossible to tell the male from the female until they breed. The female will give herself away when she lays the eggs.
Another fish I would suggest to a beginner is the Siamese Fighting fish. This fish is very peaceful with all fish except it's own kind. You never want to put two males in the same aquarium, they will tear each other apart. This how they earned their name, they came from Siam, and they fight each other to the death. The only other thing you have watch if you put them in a community tank is the nippers such as the Barb family. Because of their beautiful flowing fins some fish like to pick on them. They are often displayed in a small bowl because they are so docile and can live in varied degrees of temperatures. 72degrees-82degrees
The next fish is the Guppy. This fish is a live bearing fish, this means that the young hatch inside the mother and are delivered free swimming at a size much larger than a egg laying species. The parent fish and the other fish in the aquarium will try to eat them, so you must have plenty of cover or places for them to hide. Many people start with the live bearers because they are easy to care for and are very colorful.
The Swordtail, the Molly and the Platy are three more of the peaceful live bearing aquarium fish that are easy to take care of.

| THE
PLATY
They all enjoy the brackish water Aquarium. To more accurately describe Platys, I would say they were Brackish water fish. Platys live along the coasts of the Southern U.S.,mexico, Central America, and south America. They are mainly found in tidal marshes. These marshes however still are more like a freshwater body of water than a marine body of water. The aquarium hobby however has very effectively adapted the platy to total freshwater conditions. One reason aquarists have trouble with platys and other livebearers is they allow the water conditions to become acidic, a condition Platys do not thrive in. If your Platys ever show signs of stress the first thing I would do is to change about 15-25% of the water and add a tablespoon of aquarium salt per ten gallons. by no means does this make it a salt water tank. The amount of salt required to make a tank marine is in excess of 50 times saltier. The salinity for a marine tank is measured by specific gravity. Marine tanks have an average specific gravity of 1.023. This means it is 1.023 times more dense or heavier than freshwater. To measure this, a hydrometer is used. Keep the pH of your tank up and use salt sparingly and you should start to have better results with your platys.
The Black Molly Mollies come in four main colors, silver, gold, black, and green. There is also commonly available a silver molly with black spots that is call the Dalmatian Molly and a Marbled Molly with the same (white and black) colors. To learn about the Molly The Molly One of the reasons aquarist (especially beginners) have problems with mollies is because they either don't know, or choose to ignore the fact that mollies need brackish water. Mollies seem susceptible to ich, fungus and mainly, shimmy. Shimmy can be cured by raising the water temperature to 90 degrees F. for two or three days. This temperature doesn't hurt any of the other fish. They need a partial vegetable diet picking at the algae in the tank. They also appreciate some cooked spinach as a treat. (Use only organically grown spinach since the biocides used on most vegetables are deadly to fish.)

GREAT INFORMATION ON This is one of my prize Swordtails I feed them my special blend, they get larger and live longer. Their colors are much brighter. They have young every 3 to 4 weeks. I sell them to the Aquarium shops. I also sell my special blend only on the Internet ....Andre
My next species for the community aquarium is the Tetra. There are many types of tetra but the most favored is the Neon Tetra. When purchasing this fish, one should purchase a least six, the more the better. They are a schooling fish and they look super swimming together in a school.

The Gourami is another fish I would recommend. The Dwarf and the famous Kissing Gourami are pictured here. The entire Gourami family are very peaceful fish. You will love these fish. They are pretty easy to breed in most cases if you have the patients. |
The Dwarf Gourami tends to be shy and will hide a lot, but you can obtain the Three spot which is a very pretty blue, and is sometimes called the Blue Gourami.

| Anabantids are found in Africa and Asia. Members of the families
Anabantidae, Belontiidae, Helostomatidae, and Osphronemidae, Anabantids are
also referred to as the ``labyrinth fishes''. This is due to a special breathing
organ referred to as the labyrinth organ which is essentially a maze of tunnels
near the fish's gills. Labyrinth fish gulp air at the surface of the water
and absorb it through the labyrinth organ, allowing them to live in water
with too little oxygen to support fish which only breath through their gills.
Some Anabantids can survive out of water for several hours breathing only
through their labyrinths, as long as they stay moist. Anabas testudineus,
known as the Climbing Perch, is said to be able to climb trees and to live
out of water for up to two days.
As well as giving aquarists some additional choices for community-tank fish, Anabantids offer some unique options to fish keepers as well as presenting a few problems. Because some Anabantids are able to withstand cooler temperatures, and because of their ability to survive in water with very low oxygen, these fishes can be kept in tanks or bowls without heaters or filtration. On the other hand, some Anabantids (particularly males of some species) are very territorial and some grow quite large. Breeding Anabantids can be quite rewarding. Some species build nests out of bubbles into which they place their eggs while others, like some Cichlids, are mouthbrooders.
The most commonly seen Anabantid is probably the Betta or Siamese Fighting Fish (which is generally said to be Betta splendens but is probably a crossbreed). Artificial color varieties with red, blue, green, purple, and many other colors in various combinations are widely available. Males are bred to have very large fins and both sexes are seen with double tails. Siamese Fighting Fish generally make poor choices for the community tank for two reasons. First, as their name would imply, they are very territorial. The aggression is greatest between two males, but can be directed towards any fish that looks to the Betta too much like another Betta. Second, their long fins make easy targets for many fish such as Barbs. Siamese Fighting Fish can be kept alone in bowls (the larger the better) or tanks without filtration as long as frequent partial water changes are done. They do need warm temperatures, however, and are sensitive to temperature changes, so a constant heat supply is needed if the room is less than about 75F. Also, due to poor breeding, many Siamese Fighting Fish are not very healthy. A 3" male would be a large adult; females stay smaller.
A better choice for keeping alone in a bowl or small tank is the Paradise Fish - Macropodus opercularis. These are much hardier fish than the Fighters and can withstand temperatures down to 60F. They may jump, however, so the tank should be covered to be safe. Also, like Siamese Fighting Fish, male Paradise Fish can be extremely territorial towards one another. Paradise Fish may get up to 4" long. Another very commonly seen Anabantid is the Blue or Three-Spot Gourami - Trichogaster trichopterus. Gold, Silver, and Cosby Gouramies are also widely available and are simply artificial color varieties of the Blue Gourami. Blue Gouramies can get up to 6" long. They are not as aggressive as Fighters or Paradise Fish, but more than one in a small tank may lead to constant (if not overly deadly) chasing. They will do well in a tank with larger schooling fishes. Similar, though slightly smaller species include the Banded or Giant Gourami - Colisa fasciata (which is only a giant compared to the similarly colored Dwarf Gourami described below), the Thick-lipped Gourami - Colisa labiosa and the somewhat less aggressive Pearl Gourami - Trichogaster leeri and Moonlight Gourami - T. microlepis. The Kissing Gourami - Helostoma temmincki grows larger (up to 12") but makes a good fish for beginners with larger tanks. It is peaceful, though males will contest with one another by pressing their lips together and pushing - the so-called ``kissing'' from which the common name derives. Most Kissing Gouramies seen will be of the Pink variety. Small Gouramies, only growing to 2" or so in length, are also available. These include the Dwarf Gourami - Colisa lalia, the Honey Gourami - C. chuna, and the Sunset Dwarf Gourami (probably a cross between C. lalia and C. chuna). In theory, these would all be good fish for the community aquarium. In practice, these fish are often the victims of poor breeding practices in the Far East (like so many others described before) and many are even treated with hormones before they are shipped to make them appear brighter in the store tanks. A good rule of thumb is, ``If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.'' Although harder to find, Anabantids which have had less human interference with their reproduction are generally better choices. Look for the Mouthbrooding Betta - Betta pugnax, the Licorice Gourami - Parosphromenus deissneri, the Spike-Tailed Paradise Fish - Pseudosphromenus cupanus, the Croaking Gourami - Trichopsis vittatus, and the Dwarf Croaking Gourami - T. pumilus, which range in size from 1" to 4". Do not buy Chocolate Gouramies - Sphaerichthys osphromenoides which are quite delicate, or the true Giant Gouramies - Osphronemus spp. which grow quickly to well over two feet long. CORYDORAS The Catfish is another favorite fish. The Clown Loach is also very popular. The Catfish and the Loach are bottom feeders and eat any extra food that may not be eaten right away. They are very good scavengers.

A fish that is for a more advanced aquarium is the Discus, this is the King of the Exotic Tropical Fish. You should purchase at least four of these fish if you are thinking of breeding them. If you decide to take on the Discus you will really enjoy this fish King of the Aquarium Discus should not be kept with other fish other than catfish, loaches, neons, or cardinal tetras. This is due to the fact that they are very susceptible to disease, they require a warmer water temperature (85 degrees F), and are sometimes slow eaters and will not fight for food. General Tips for Discus Keeping Cichlid
Cichlid, any of about 85 genera of freshwater and brackish-water fishes that make up the cichlid family in the perch order. In Africa cichlids are the dominant fishes in Lakes Nyasa (Malawi), Victoria, and Tanganyika, where hundreds of cichlid species are found. They also occur in India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, the West Indies, and South and Central America; the range of one species extends into Texas. Several are popular aquarium fish, and many are extremely important as food fish. Cichlids show considerable variety in shape but generally have a laterally flattened body, with spines in the dorsal and anal fins. They may be up to about 80 cm (about 30 in) long. The pike cichlids have an elongate body, and some other genera have high, sail-like fins. Many cichlids are active predators; others eat insects or plants. Highly successful evolutionarily, the cichlid family is of interest to behavioral scientists because of the wide range of behavioral patterns it exhibits, particularly in breeding. Many species are territorial, clearing out a nesting space and guarding the eggs. Some are mouth brooders. The male digs a breeding pit in which the female lays her eggs and then picks up the fertilized eggsor perhaps the unfertilized eggs and the male's spermin her mouth, keeping them there until they hatch. Males of some species are also mouth brooders. The young remain close to the mother and flee for safety back into her mouth, until eventually she rejects them. One group of cichlids, the tilapias, are some of the most commonly cultured food fishes in the world, and both fresh and smoked tilapia are increasing in popularity. Some members of this group have been used as a biological control for aquatic vegetation. Scientific classification: Cichlids make up the family Cichlidae in the order Perciformes. Pike cichlids make up the genus Crenicichla, tilapias the genus Tilapia. Encarta Encyclopedia Just a Note About The Materials Used We try to get the permission of everyone whose material we use. Prevent the loss of your fish
by being prepared. You Should have a medicine chest ready for emergences (if you wait to get the remedy after the fish shows signs of a disease it could be to late), I recommend these remedies as a must...... ( they are without question the best available)
The Clown Loach can live in a Aquarium for many years. Many have been known to live as long as twenty years.
