Freshwater Puffers
Figure Eight
Maybe it's the cute wide-eyed ET look or maybe it's the way they hover
in the water like a water-logged bumblebee. Whatever the reason, puffers
have always been my favorite fish. Being a puffer fan, I have spent many
hours searching for information on brackish and freshwater puffers. In that
time I have found little and often conflicting information.

Freshwater and Brackish
Puffers
There are many varieties of Puffer Fish and listed here you will find
most of the freshwater/brackish kinds.
Red-eye Puffer
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Tetraodon lorteti
WATER CONDITIONS: Freshwater
TEMPERATURE: 24C to 28C
LOCATION: Eastern India and
AVERAGE SIZE: 2.5" - 3"
pH: 6.5
TEMPERAMENT: Aggressive. I have noticed that these puffers are one nasty
fish and should be kept alone.
NOTES: These are one of the smaller freshwater puffers. The male and female
are easy to tell apart because in some cases the female is lighter in colour,
and as for the male he is darker in colour. Red-eyed puffers prefer soft,
acidic water. There have been a number of people trying to breed these fish,
and most of the time this resulted in death for one of the puffers.
Pufferfish
dogfaced puffer fish (Arothron nigropunctatus)
green spotted puffer (Tetraodon nigrifilis)
jewel puffer (Canthigaster solandri)
leopard puffer (Tetraodon nigrifilis)
porcupine puffer (Diodon holacanthus)
spotted boxfish (Ostracion meleagris)
spotted puffer (Tetraodon nigrifilis)
spotted yellow boxfish (Ostracion cubicus)
striped puffer (Arothron manilensis)
valentine puffer (Canthigaster valentini)
yellow boxfish (Tetrosomus gibbosus

Puffers, Boxfish and Porcupinefish
Family: Triodontidae (Three-toothed Puffer)
Family: Tetraodontidae (Puffers)
Family: Ostraciidae (Boxfish)
Family: Diodontidae (Porcupinefish
We are combining puffers, boxfish, and Porcupinefish because they have
similar requirements and are closely related (they all belong to the same
order, Tetraodontiformes, which also includes triggerfish).
All of these fish, excluding the single species family, Triodontidae,
are found in most of the tropical oceans of the world. Triodontidae is found
in the Indo-West Pacific. Puffers, boxfish, and Porcupinefish are all very
hardy aquarium residents that like to eat meaty foods. They love to eat,
so if you like to feed fish, think about getting these kinds of fish! They
generally move kind of awkwardly using their pectoral fins for locomotion
and the tail fin only in case of emergency or newly arrived food. They are
usually very interesting fish to observe and are quite unusual in
appearance.

The Pufferfish Web Site
Pufferfish have smaller sized genomes compared to other vertebrates.
As a result their genomes are "mini" models for vertebrates. Typically, only
a small part of the genome comprise the genes. The genes are translated into
products responsible for the properties of living organisms. Compared with
other vertebrates, the puffer fish genomes have a higher proportion of genes
and a lower proportion of "junk DNA". Biologists have not defined all the
functional parts of the human genome, and the Fugu genome is proving useful
as a comparative tool to help find functional regions in human DNA. Some
of the junk DNA (ie., the DNA outside the genes) have function, ie., "not
all junk is rubbish". For example, some of these regions are known to influence
the rate at which genes become functional. The Fugu genome and its annotation
can be probed to hunt for regions in the genome likely to be functional.
Giant Puffer
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Tetradon mbu
WATER CONDITIONS: Freshwater
TEMPERATURE: 24C to 26C
LOCATION: Middle and lower Congo river
AVERAGE SIZE: Can reach to become 2-3 feet
pH: 7.5
TEMPERAMENT: Aggresive, but in some cases the mbu has been kept in community
tanks.
NOTES: The giant puffer is one of the largest freshwater puffers known
to man. Personaly I woulden't put anything with my T. mbu but some day I
plan on adding some fish to his tank and see what he will do.
