If  we understand the basic physiological requirements and assume the very serious responsibility of caring and maintaining these delicate creatures,  it is possible to enjoy a very interesting and rewarding hobby.

When you think of your fish as a pet you'll agree, they deserve the best care and attention you can provide. A healthy aquarium is relatively easy to achieve and maintain, but it will not happen by itself... it depends on you.

INVERTEBRATE

INFORMATION

As we all know we are quickly depleting the natural ocean of its bounty! Many are concerned about the impact the collection of fish and wild corals has had on the reefs and oceans around the world. Although we believe that the responsible collection of corals and fish in an ecologically sound manner makes such items largely a sustainable resource, restrictions are starting to be imposed at various localities around the world. Some species that we as hobbyist would like to get now are no longer available or very rare. The future of the industry might ultimately lie with aquacultured corals & farmed-raised fish.

"Many of the lovely reef fishes in the marine aquarium trade are treated like cut flowers, dying soon after they are purchased, then simply being replaced,"

But many reef fish can live for years or even decades . It is the methods by which the fish are caught, transported and ultimately cared for by consumers that is often to blame for high mortality rates among aquarium fish.

Clownfish

are one of the easiest tropical marine aquarium fish to breed.

Unlike many of the other tropical marine aquarium fish, clownfish regularly spawn in the marine aquarium. Furthermore clownfish have relatively large eggs and larvae which makes raising them a somewhat easier task as the larvae are able to eat easily cultured live foods.

Breeding clowns is a very rewarding experience.

Its not nearly as hard as you might think.

The hardest part is raising the food to feed the larvae.

And that is more a matter of establishing a daily routine.

That is beyond the scope of this article.

Anemone

British Marine Life Study Society

Reproduction:

Spans the entire gamut, sexual and asexual. New individuals may form from a piece torn off during locomotion or trauma, by longitudinal or transverse fission.

Sea anemones may be separate sexes or hermaphroditic. If same sex, generally eggs and sperm tend to be produced at different times. Fertilization and some development may occur within the body cavity or not. Typically, anemone larvae have a planktonic developmental phase before settling.

Data Base

Gobies

One of three families presently recognized as "Gobies" (Rhyacichthyidae, Odontobutidae, and Gobiidae). Most have scales, but lack the sensory lateral line on the body found in most fishes. Representatives first appeared (freshwater) in the fossil record during the Eocene ~ 30 to 50 million years ago. This species is similar to the less commonly collected A. bynoensis with more pronounced markings overall but lacks a complete solid horizontal stripe extending from the snout through the lower half of the eye just posterior of the pectoral fin. In some specimemns the stripe there may be no body stripes. Body shows bars (banding) in light, dark, or both colors. Fins are typically pigmented and most specimens have a distinct spot on the first dorsal.

The Breeder's Registry!

Now in the 9th year!

The Breeder's Registry was founded in 1993 by Stanley Brown, Joyce Wilkerson and others to encourage the sharing of information about breeding and rearing marine fishes and invertebrates, specifically those kept or cultured in closed system aquaria. We believe that captive propagation of marine organisms can be a viable alternative to wild collection.

Reproduction and Captive Breeding of Two

Red Sea Dottybacks:

Pseudochromis fridmani and P. flavivertex

A very important factor is the water quality. Despite the constant nest care of a male Pseudochromis, an unfavorable water quality can negatively influence the hatching result of the eggs. Spawning tanks should be kept meticulously clean, while the dissolved organic carbon level should be maintained as low as possible by siphoning uneaten food and applying mechanical filtration, protein skimming, carbon, and biofiltration

THE DAMSEL FISH

Reproduction - Dascyllus are substrate spawners. Pairs lay their several hundred sticky eggs on dead coral or other hard material that they've cleared. The male will guard the eggs vigorously until they hatch in about 3 days. Breeding the Dascyllus is considered far more difficult than some other damselfishes.

Classification - The damsels of the genus Dascyllus are not known for their bland colors , but for their hardiness and antics. The three spot or domino {D. trimaculatus } , the four-striped or blacktail humbug { D. melanurus } and the three-striped or whitetail damsel { D. aruanus } are the most common of the Dascyllus species.

Sexual maturity: 2-5 years.

Spawning season: Spring - summer in temperate regions, less seasonal in the tropics.

Number of eggs laid: Up to 20,000

Hatching time: 3-7 days.

DOTTYBACKS

The newly hatched larvae are started out on enriched rotifers as their fist food. Rotifers are enriched or made good and nutritious by feeding them good and nutritious green water planktonic algae which are in turn made good and nutritious by feeding good and nutritious (possibly delicious) special fortified fertilizer with vitamins and minerals. As the newly hatched dottyback larvae grow they can be fed larger foods like newly hatched brine shrimp then larger fortified brine shrimp and eventually frozen, canned or dry food mixes. VibraGro fish food has made a dramatic difference in tank raised fish health and coloration.

Plankton

Plankton Menagerie

Members of a zooplankton group called rotifers, which measure a mere 400 microns across, serve as the microscopic equivalent of a miner's canary, because they are sensitive to toxins and therefore may be used to monitor the health of estuaries and streams.

Captive Breeding

As breeding is not yet common within the hobby we know how hard it is finding information on the subject.

The Indo-Pacific White Striped

cleaner shrimp

The Indo-Pacific White Striped cleaner shrimp, Lysmata amboinensis is an invertebrate that is commonly kept by both experienced and new comers to the marine aquarium hobby. Like all members of their class, Crustacean, they are sensitive to abrupt changes in water parameters and therefor must be acclimatized to new tanks slowly. Thermal shock seems most important to avoid, so a long floatation of the purchasing bag is necessary. Once this achieved however they are hardy invertebrates. When kept in groups they are often on view during the day, displaying their vivid red and white colours and waving their long white antennae.

THE DAMSEL FISH

A characteristic feature of the breeding behavior of the damselfish is next building. Having established a territory the male prepares a suitable rocky ledge or coral surface for spawning by cleaning it. Using color change, excited swimming movements and, in some species, short bursts of clicking sounds, the male encourages a mature female to approach the spawning site and lay her eggs, which he quickly fertilizes. Courtship and mating take about 10 or 20 minutes and some males may mate with several different females.

Up to 20,000 tiny, elliptical eggs are laid by each female and these are then tirelessly guarded and tended by the male. He fans water across the eggs with his fins, occasionally picking out dead eggs which would otherwise develop fungus and threaten the whole batch. Male damselfish will defend their eggs against fish much larger than themselves with little regards for their own safety.

The eggs usually hatch after three to seven days and the larvae spend weeks drifting in the ocean, feeding on small planktonic animals and plants. Some species of damselfish may mature at two or three years of age while others take much longer.

Marc Weiss: Algae Magic 6 Oz

Enhances clarity of the tank by eliminating the food sources for nuisance algae blooms (including green hair, brown diatom and red slime)

Not harmful to fish, plants, corals, rocks and other living organisms in the aquarium

Does not contain copper sulfate

Algae MagicTM is 100% organic. It takes the natural chemistry of the past and transforms it to the present. Clarity of the water relates directly to a water-balanced tank. Algae MagicTM provides the ability to lower the food supply of the nuisance algae. This event can take a short amount of time but it is not instantaneous. The objective of the formulation allows the desired plant growth to deal with wastes in the tank to more efficiently maintain better oxygenation. As the increased aerobic conditions of the tank predominate, nuisance algae will still exist (because this is the natural state of the life cycle), however, they will not predominate and cause displeasing aesthetics. Algae MagicTM when added to your tank will fortify your plants' leaf structure. The by-product of this effect enhances oxygenation within the tank and adds an additional food source for animal life. As the plants and microscopic creatures respond to the enhanced environment, the tank naturally clears of visible wastes and nuisance algae ? creating an awesome view.
