If we understand the basic physiological requirements and assume the very serious responsibility of caring and maintaining these delicate aquatic creatures, it is possible to enjoy a very interesting and rewarding hobby.

Many Thanks to: Shirley Sharpe

"The creation of a pristine freshwater aquascape within an aquarium, embodies not only the technological aspect of maintaining an underwater ecosystem, but also the artistic design of nature."

Those of you with slower connections will experience some delays in downloading pictures and may develop some level of frustration. We hope that this does not detract from the content of the site. We strongly believe the images are worth waiting for and convey something that words alone could not. This site was designed after a careful poll of past visitors. There is nothing you can do on a continual basis to help minimize algae and promote plant health as well as fish health as the simple water change.

This is one area where there is no such thing as too much too often. A stream or river may change water thousands of times a day. Best of all worlds would be a tank that is set up to allow for a constant replacement of water on a daily basis. Unfortunately it isn't practical. Change at the least 25% on a bi-weekly basis.

You'll find fish and plants will do better and the algae will be none existent. There is no better prevention for a algae build up than this, water changes.

Compare that to the alternative of constantly fighting algae it becomes time well worth spending.

Listed briefly, here, in order of importance, are factors that will have an effect on aquatic plant growth.

Aquarium water should contain all the essential nutrients in a form that is useable by aquatic plants.

A constant supply of critical nutrients should be available.

Provide either a carbon dioxide infusion or a carbonate hardness (kH) value of 50ppm or higher or both.

Provide adequate light, perhaps multiple light tubes are required.

Light on and off times need to be regular and represent a full day.

Circulation is a big advantage, plants like a current of water.

Aeration though, could be detrimental, expelling carbon dioxide.

Provide the correct water parameters. pH should be between 6.0 and 7.5, every plant has a preference. Hardness should be between 40ppm and 150ppm. Salinity should be below 440ppm. Temperature, not critical but more warmth is more grow.

Perform regular water changes, the minimum is 25% per month.

Substrate (gravel) size should be around 2mm size and some slow movement of water through the gravel is beneficial. If using substrate (under gravel) filters, moderate the flow.

Remove highly activated carbon from the filtration as some of the nutrients may be absorbed.

Purchase aquatic plants that grow only underwater, many plants are sold as aquatic, spend much more of their life our of water and the home aquarium does not supply conditions suitable for their survival.

Information about Aquarium Plants

Make Selection

There are few things more beautiful than a healthy thriving aquarium. You've probably seen in books, tanks that look like a section of the river has simply been lifted out and placed in an aquarium. Creating a beautiful tank is not as difficult as you may think. In fact, every great looking aquarium incorporates many of the same design principles. In this article we'll look at these principles and how to make the most of your tank.

THE NATURE AQUARIUM

When god created the earth, I wonder what kind of ideas brought life to each and every living creature? Of course there are the kinds of plants and animals that we are used to seeing every day. I have no doubt that he gave his love to all of these, and also to such living thing as those we must use a microscope to look at if we are to be aware of their existence at all.

In the making of nature aquarium; it is probable that I follow a similar path of experimental creation as god would. An aquarium is a small enclosed world. Putting sand into an empty tank, filling it with water, carefully considering where to place separate aquatic plant. Imagine the microorganism that live in the tank and the fish swimming in and out of the aquatic plants. While learning from the scenes and patterns of nature, I observed from both the minute and the wide scale aspects. In this way breathing life into the small universe of the nature aquarium, the pulse of the complex ecological system of the living creatures begins to beat, and the natural order of nature begins to take shape.

The answers to all questions are to be found in nature. This is something that every man knows deep down inside himself. It is probable that the limitless peace that nature aquariums give us, is felt from seeing the utopia-like existence of the living things inside.

Substrates for Aquarium Plants

The simplest substrate is plain fine gravel (approximately 2-3 mm grains). This is the most common type of substrate used by people keeping fish. Over time, the substrate may become enriched by the wastes of the fish and food to the point where it may be able to provide nutrients for aquatic plants although poorly. On the other hand, with a careful balance of nutrient additions, it is quite simple to grow aquatic plants even in a completely inert sand or gravel substrate. Generally one or more types of substrate additives are used in addition to or in place of the standard aquarium gravel. These include various natural soils, various clays, peat, humus, leaf mulch or commercial products such as Duplarit (laterite). These additives are intended to perform one of the following functions:

increase substrate nutrient holding capacity (CEC) thereby increasing the effective fertility of the substrate.

provide iron and possibly other trace mineral nutrients

directly provide macro-nutrients (as chemicals or by decomposition)

decrease porosity to inhibit nutrient diffusion (out of the substrate)

increase porosity to permit nutrient diffusion (into the substrate)

increase the density of the substrate to prevent a fluffy components from being dragged up by uprooting
