Or Why Can't MS Write a Link Right?

If you *Upgraded* to MSIE 5.5 from either a website download or a Windows CD, then you may have a system file that is tainted with bad coding at the hand of Microsoft. The bad apple is no less than the same file responsible for the Patch Overrun Vulnerability found in IE5.0. Yes, the sorry dll is none other than "SHDOCLC.DLL" which is a member of the notorious Show Doc family [part of MSIE's rendering engine]. Is your system plagued with this bad dll? To find out, go online with MSIE5.5, type in the Address Bar an obviously mis-spelled URL & wait for the ever so familiar "The page cannot be displayed" message." If the "Refresh" link is dead [greyed], you have the bad dll. Here's an example:
MS may get around to fixing this coding error, but you can beat them to the punch by substituting an older version of "shdoclc.dll" for the current one. Version 5.00.2314.1000 will do the job & is freely available at The Dll Archive . Be sure to back up your current version of shdoclc.dll before making the substitution. After the substitution, here is what you should get [& what MS should have given you in the first place]:
For the curious, to see the bad code in its shameful state, open the "bad" shdoclc.dll with a word processor [such as Wordpad], do a Find for the word "Refresh"; nearby you will see a link written as "a xhref=" which [if you know rudimentary HTML] should be written as "a href=". Of course, we AOLers know that MS is loathe to use "a href" otherwise they would send out their Freedom-To-Innovate drivel & MSN Explorer spam with live links to AOL mailboxes.

A REAL FIX IS HERE!!     UPDATE 11-27-00
