***Gullah Excursion***
This is the original Gullah Excursion on which a series was done in the NY Amsterdam News and features have been done in Essence and Upscale Magazines. This trip includes historical tours of various Sea Islands. Memorial Day Weekend will be the annual tour to the islands of Beaufort County in South Carolina. The tour group also participates in the Gullah Festival. There is a special Frogmore Feast upon arrival and interaction with local community members. The tour is conducted by an original Sea Islander i.e. "geechee gyal." Customized tours are being done throughout the year from the "Hunnuh Home: Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Center" on St. Helena Island in SC. To find out about these or the annual excursion, send e-mail to GullGeeCo@aol.com.
THIS TOUR SELLS OUT EVERY YEAR, Travel arrangements can be made from anywhere. Those in the NY tri-state area will travel by bus from the city. Don't delay in registering if you intend to go. After ten years of returning to Sea Island roots and bring others home for the originator of this tour, the dynamics of the excursion have changed. Thus, there will be special events such as on-going living history activities which will include shouting, storytelling, and old-fashion Sea Island gatherings.
If you have been thinking about attending an excursion that is full of Afrikan history and enjoyment with other Afrikan people, you should make sure that you attend this one. If you are also a gullah/geechee person, "e duh time fuh hunnuh gwine on bak, ya!" Registration kits are available now. Get in touch ASAP.
The annual Gullah Excursion is held every May. The Gullah Heritage Excursion is a semi-annual tour done in conjuntion with the Penn Center Heritage Day Celebration in November. You can also be placed on the mailing list for the next tour now. Bring your family or your group to the Sea Islands and take in some of the history and healing energy. Tours can be customized for other times of the year for groups of ten or more people. Simply contact AKAN at (212)439-1026 or GullGeeCo@aol.com
Ourstory & Heritage Conference
The Ourstory & Heritage Conference< is the only conference of its kind and it is done for and by people of African descent. The funding for the conference stems from the community and not from major corporate sponsors. Thus, the integrity of what is being presented remains intact since the host of the conference are only accountable to the community. Proceeds from the conference are provided to a cultural institution or project within the community that host the conference. The 1st annual conference was hosted by the Black Cultural Centre of Nova Scotia, the 2nd annual was held in St. Augustine, Florida to produce seed money for a Black history marker project for that city, and the 3rd annual was held as a fundraiser for Penn Center, Inc and focused on Sea Island history and culture and preserving it.
Given the magnitude of things that are not often presented in regard to the contributions of African people to the world, the topic for the conference changes every year to focus on something that is obscure to the masses.
If you would like registration kits for any of the tours and/or membership information for the Afrikan Kultural Arts Network, please e-mail your postal address and/or fax number to AfriKuNet@aol.com<
